Disney has stood out in recent times for the wave of adaptations of its classic movies to the Live Action format. In some cases it has decided to update the story a bit by giving a touch to the plot so that it fits better with the new global trends. The first character that obtained this change of perspective was the villain of the classic story Sleeping Beauty, being Maleficent, the absolute protagonist of the plot but at the cost of sacrificing the character's darkness in exchange for a story in which she is the victim. Now 5 years later the character returns in a sequel titled Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.
Following this modification on this occasion, Aurora (Elle Fanning) being already Queen of the Moor, commits herself to Prince Phillip (Harry Dickinson) of the neighboring kingdom of Ulstead, after learning of such news, Queen Ingrith (Michelle Pfeiffer), mother Phillip, invites you to a dinner to celebrate such a commitment, Maleficent (Angelina Jolie) is with little expectation of this situation, but accepts the invitation to dinner. When this happens, the intentions of Queen Ingrith are revealed and an event causes the Malefic legend to resurface and is fleeing, meanwhile Aurora will try to change the situation, but the plans of neither of them, will go as expected and Queen Ingrith's true intentions will be revealed. But in the meantime after the Malefic misunderstanding you will discover that it is not the only dark fairy on earth and what its true origin is when meeting Conall (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and others.
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, continues with a totally new story to what we used to know, a new narrative line is described in this sequel by introducing new characters and trying to reveal the true origin of Maleficent and put the fairies at war against beings humans. But this story is unbearably less fun, more mellow, full of situations that only ruin a character that was characterized by a more genuine evil and trying to modify and justify it causes all interest in him to be lost. And the new characters, you can not talk more that they are full of the same clichés characteristics of the characters of fairy tales, a villain who wants revenge, others full of resentment, the naive man and the clever girl who discovers the truth.
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, is a film that despite having a spectacular production, its new story, is the opposite of a spectacular story and showcasing its actresses and female characters. Angelina Jolie, despite her costumes, offers nothing and disappears in a boring story. Pfeiffer, on the other hand, strives to justify his character's actions with his performance but is not enough, and his effects full of CGI, new colors and creatures, are dazzled instead of shining, watch online the movie and get your own conclusions on it.
Disney here has a product made, just to sell and continue with the money machine, but hopefully they realize that a sequel was unnecessary and more if the end result is something like this. And hopefully stop with this.
Visually the film is beautiful, and if the first installment was already a sight to behold; It overcomes it. Especially the shots where we see the race of the Dark Fairies in full flight, making us feel the speed and adrenaline that should cause flying at such high heights.
We must mention the good works of Angelina Jolie and Michelle Pfeiffer. We saw the first look in the previous one, but Pfeiffer shows again that the role of villain already entered in years is like a ring to the finger, asking us how it is that they do not hire her more often for this type of roles.
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is not a good movie, but we can't say it's bad either. Maybe it's something worse than this, and it's forgettable. Without knowing too well because they made a sequel (apart from the monetary factor), we doubt that someone who sees it will remember it within a few hours after watching it. But watch it now to see for yourself if we're right or not.
