The very first time I watched The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, I was struck by how similar the story of the movie to The Godfather and Scarface. There were some major similarities between the two and some major differences as well.
The main similarity between the two movies is that they follow the same kind of organized crime story structure that The Godfather and Scarface followed. Both The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and the Godfather and Scarface were some of the biggest movies of their time, both centered on very charismatic leaders that managed to inspire a lot of loyalty in their followers and the former movie had some of the best actors that ever graced the silver screen. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly was a big hit and the follow up movies made a killing as well.
Unlike The Godfather and Scarface however, this movie did not have to deal with any kind of domestic terrorism or warring drug cartels. Also unlike Scarface, this movie was not directed by a Hollywood A-lister and also there were no real assassinations in the movie. In The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Vincent Vega was the lead character and he was played by Clint Eastwood. He was a tough guy, with an almost fatalistic outlook on life, who always seemed to be drawn into trouble and was more than willing to accept any punishment that came his way.
The film was more than just a continuation of the story of Scarface. In fact, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly are actually a sequel to the first Scarface movie that introduced Marlon Brando's character, Tony Montana. The plot for this movie is much different from the first movie and the person that originally inspired Tony to form the Marlon Brando persona, his sister, is a major part of the movie as well.
If you've never seen the film then I suggest you give it a watch. The plot is quite simple; Marlon Brando plays an individual named Burt Lancaster, he's a junkie who has a "cold" and if you look at his character in the film, you'll see that he's always surrounded by a bunch of junkies. This man is Manny Quintana, who is a well-known mobster in New York and also happens to be Burt Lancaster's right hand man.
Once Marlon Brando is pulled into a mafia war and Burt Lancaster's drug war, the two factions start to fight and Marlon turns on Burt Lancaster, killing him. As he kills him, he gets the hots for Marcella Briones (Mia Sara) the daughter of the head of the New York mob, which at the time, was one of the biggest mob stories that had ever come across the silver screen. She is also a major player in the film and you will see that she goes from being a serious bride to a very sweet and loving girlfriend in the movie.
This is also the start of the movie in which Tom Hagen plays Bruce Willis, he's another player who has already played in the previous films of the series, but this is the first time that he plays a supporting role and also he becomes one of the main characters of the series. Another major player, Robert Duvall plays Chris Wells, he is the leader of the LAPD.
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly are an interesting movie and it's something that I wish I could have seen when I was a kid. It really did showcase how tough the average criminal is and at the same time, showed us the strength of character that the average man can possess.
